Sometimes
God answers our prayers
With pizza and broccoli.
I was an student in college
And I worked
At the student cafeteria.
I served dinner to students
Who had meal plans
And I did not.
But I had a kitchen
In my apartment.
Just not much food
Or money.
But despite my lack,
I had made a promise
To pay my tithing
Every time I got paid.
And I did.
Even when it meant
That I wouldn’t have enough
To also buy groceries.
Because I trusted God
Even if I didn’t know
If it would work out
This time.
And one day
When my bank account
Was as empty as my stomach
And I knew
That empty cupboards
Awaited me at my apartment,
A sweet co-worker of mine
Randomly asked me
If I wanted to come over
And have dinner
At her apartment.
Her name was Leisl
Like in the movie
The Sound of Music.
We weren’t the closest friends
But I accepted.
And I still remember
Exactly what we had
For that meal.
She made homemade pizza
And then cooked some broccoli.
And at the end of the night,
My stomach was full
But so was my heart.
Because the only way
She could have known
That I needed that
Was if God Himself
Told her.
And I was in awe.
That He had told her
And that she had listened.
And I don’t think I told her
How empty my cupboards were
But I’ve never forgotten her.
Or her kindness towards me.
And I hope I never will.
